Beyond Weight Loss: What GLP-1 Research Means for the Future of Medicine

GLP-1 medications, like Ozempic® and Wegovy®, have become one of the biggest topics in health today. Many people know them as weight-loss drugs, but their story is much bigger than weight alone. These medications are changing how doctors think about conditions like diabetes, heart health, and metabolism. So what does this mean for people who are not trying to lose weight?

The answer starts with understanding what GLP-1 medications actually do. GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally made in the body. This hormone does a few key things:

Can GLP-1 medications help reduce alcohol cravings?

Researchers are studying semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) as a possible treatment for alcohol use disorder. In Phase 2 clinical trials, researchers are investigating whether semaglutide affects the brain's reward pathways and helps reduce alcohol cravings and heavy drinking. Early findings are encouraging, but larger studies are needed before the medication could be approved for this use.2

Can GLP-1 medications treat fatty liver disease?

Researchers have been studying semaglutide and tirzepatide (better known as Zepbound®, and Mounjaro®) for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), an advanced form of fatty liver disease. Semaglutide has shown benefits in late-stage clinical research and is now approved in the United States for certain patients with MASH. Tirzepatide continues to be studied in Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials to determine whether it can reduce liver inflammation and scarring.3

Can GLP-1 medications lower the risk of heart disease?

Researchers studied semaglutide in a large Phase 3 trial, which included adults who are overweight or obese and have established cardiovascular disease. The study found that semaglutide reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death.8

Can GLP-1 medications protect the kidneys?

Researchers are evaluating whether semaglutide has shown kidney benefits in people with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, while tirzepatide is being studied in additional kidney disease trials. Researchers are investigating whether these medications can help slow kidney damage, reduce protein loss in the urine, and delay the need for dialysis.4

Can GLP-1 medications improve sleep apnea?

Researchers studied tirzepatide in Phase 3 trials and learned that many participants experienced meaningful improvements in obstructive sleep apnea, including fewer breathing interruptions during sleep. These results led to FDA approval for adults with obesity and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. Researchers continue studying the medication's long-term effects on sleep health.5

Can people lose weight without losing muscle?

Researchers are studying semaglutide and tirzepatide to better understand changes in body composition during weight loss. Current studies are evaluating how much weight loss comes from body fat versus lean muscle and whether exercise, higher protein intake, or additional therapies can help preserve muscle mass, especially in older adults.7

Can next-generation GLP-1 medications work even better?

Researchers are studying retatrutide, an investigational medication that targets three hormones (GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon) instead of one or two. Retatrutide is currently in multiple Phase 3 clinical trials evaluating obesity, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, osteoarthritis, and other obesity-related conditions. Researchers hope this next generation of medicines may produce more weight loss and additional health benefits.8

While they are already changing care for some people, researchers are continuing to learn how these treatments may support health in new ways.
